If you have a son or daughter who's interested in aerospace, the deadline for Washington Aerospace Scholars is approaching fast. This free, statewide partnership program lets high school juniors explore the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
The first step is to apply by Nov. 6. Student applications are available at http://www.museumofflight.org/washingtonaerospacescholars and should be sent directly to the Museum of Flight. Those accepted will work at the Museum of Flight on online curriculum developed by NASA - the first step in being considered for the six-day summer residency in Seattle.

Haugen to receive fifth “Business Champion” award from chambers 6/1/2009
OLYMPIA — For the fifth straight year, Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, will be awarded the Business Champion Award bestowed annually by the Joint Governmental Affairs Committee of the Joint Snohomish County Chambers of Commerce.
The award recognizes Haugen’s sponsorship and support of legislation to improve the business climate of Washington and Snohomish County and will be presented Wednesday at the 2009 Legislative Recognition Breakfast at the Everett Golf & Country Club.

The Legislature adjourned a few weeks ago, but many of the bills we passed are just now being signed into law by the governor.
Last week the governor signed several important pieces of legislation relating to transportation in our state, and invited me as chair of the Senate Transportation Committee to participate and comment on what these will mean to the people of our state.

OLYMPIA — Several bills sponsored by Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, to promote agriculture in Washington are poised to become effective this summer.
“The farm friendly legislation I sponsored this year will help ensure that agriculture continues to be a way of life in our state,” said Haugen, who serves on the Senate Agricultural & Rural Economic Development Committee. “My goal is for future generations to be able to buy food grown right here in the state of Washington.”

OLYMPIA — The governor has signed legislation sponsored by Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, to provide greater clarification concerning levy rates for rural libraries.
“When propositions to create rural library districts appear on the ballots, there’s uncertainty as to what levy rates will be imposed and the measures could fail by small margins,” Haugen said. “I think this bill will help voters better understand exactly what they’re voting on.”
