K-12 Education Issue Brief

Education dollars carry the biggest return of any investment that state government makes. A quality, relevant education system is critical to successful lives, families, communities and economies. The health of our economy and society is foretold by the quality of our education system. An inclusive, quality system reaches all segments of society and leads to a healthy civic culture and a resilient economy.

Education is the paramount duty of the state of Washington.

Educators, staff and school districts are being asked to do more at a time when increased funding is harder to come by, and in an era of higher prices and litigation and liability. As society changes, so do societal expectations of what the public education system should accomplish. But it must remain adaptable, accountable and relevant to the world around it. It must also remain focused on the education of students, in an environment where schools are often asked to act as the primary health care, nutritional and social service system for an increasing number of students.
